Charles Jean-Baptiste Collin-Mézin fils, Mirecourt 1930
Charles Jean-Baptiste Collin-Mézin fils (b.1870, d.1934) was the son of one of the preeminent luthiers of his time and, like his father, was named, “Officier de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts” in 1911. Following his father’s death in 1923, he relocated the workshop to Mirecourt (although he continued using "Paris" on his labels) and his work became increasingly personal and individualistic as we see in this example. This instrument is in reflects the maker’s meticulous workmanship. It is everything one could wish for in his father’s instruments but at a more modest price. It has a darker and more generous tone than most Collin-Mézins. No doubt it benefited from being played by a professional violinist. This instrument carried him through his auditions as well as his studies with some of the greatest names in modern violin pedagogy.
