Paul Kaul, Nantes 1924
Paul Kaul (b. 1875, d. 1951) was born in Mirecourt. He apprenticed with Thibouville-Lamy then, in 1900, worked for the Paris partnership, Silvestre & Maucotel. In 1907, he opened his own shop in Nantes. He moved frequently of the remainder of his career and earned numerous awards for his work. Many top violinists such as Yehudi Menuhin and Georges Enesco owned instruments made by Kaul. His close association with acclaimed violinist and pedagogue, Lucien Capet, resulted in Kaul's development of a model made especially for and endorsed by Capet. Considered the apotheosis of Kaul's body of work, these very fine sounding violins are prized by players today. This instrument is such an example. It has a wondrously supple amber varnish over a golden-blonde ground. The wood, workmanship and conception, all excellent. It has a lush, deep, open sound with great maturity and sweetness and with generous carrying power. A perfect instrument for a musical artist.
