Silvestre et Maucotel, Paris 1902
The firm of Hippolyte Chretien Silvestre & Ernest Maucotel lasted only from 1900 to 1913. In the short span of their association Silvestre & Maucotel produced many fine instruments which we consider undervalued for their level of craftsmanship and tone.
Hippolyte Chrétien Silvestre (b.1845, d.1913) was the nephew of both Pierre and Hippolyte Silvestre. He was trained by them and eventually took over their shop in 1865. Pierre Silvestre had, in turn, worked for the two greatest masters of the French school, Lupot and Vuillaume.
Ernest Maucotel (b.1867,d.unknown) was one of many great makers born in Mirecourt. He apprenticed with Paul Bailly before working for his uncle in Moscow in 1885. After Silvestre's death in 1913, he joined the partnership with Paul Deschamp.
This beautiful French violin, modeled after Stradivari, exhibits choice materials, crisp workmanship and is covered in lush, supple, transparent red varnish. It has a sweet and balanced tone and makes an elegant choice in almost any musical setting.
