An Italian Cello Attributed to Giovanni Battista Gaibisso c. 1965
This Italian cello has many of the hallmarks of the Ligurian violin makers of the mid-20th century. We think this instrument was probably started by Giovanni Battista Gaibisso (b.1876-d.1962) and left unfinished at the time of his death. It is likely that another maker (possibly Pietro Gallinotti of Solero) completed the work. What is certain is that this Italian work displays great materials and a superb varnish. It is a heavy and powerful instrument with a dense sound. Though further research on this instrument is ongoing, it is a wonderful 20th-century Italian cello, conservatively priced making it a wonderful value.
