About Us
Charles W. Liu Fine Violins has been serving the greater Salt Lake City area for more than fifteen years. Since our founding in 2002, our instruments have represented the highest quality of handcrafted instruments for all levels, from the beginning student levels to professional levels. All of our shop-made (including our student level) instruments are fully hand carved by highly qualified artisans. We also carry a large selection of Italian, French, and German instruments spanning from modern make to the 1700s. Mr. Liu and other in-house luthiers do all repairs and restorations. We also have highly trained musicians on the sales floor who are happy to help you select the perfect instrument to fit your needs. In addition to repairing and selling instruments, we have an excellent rental program, which we recently expanded to provide the best national rental program available to players and families across the country.
To accommodate our growing business, Charles W. Liu Fine Violins has expanded to Los Angeles, California. It is a full-service shop focusing on higher-end instruments. You can see pictures of our new shop in the Photos section.
Both of our locations cater to all levels of players from beginners to professionals. Some of our clients include members of the LA-Phil, Salt Lake Symphony, LA-Opera, as well some of LA's top studio musicians and distinguished soloists. We serve the needs of local schools including Granite, Jordan, and Canyons Districts, the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, The Waterford School and more in Utah. Our Los Angeles location serves the Sierra Canyon School, Polytechnic School (Pasadena), the Gooden School (Sierra Madre) as well as students at the Colburn School, the USC Thornton School of Music, UCLA and more.
As part of our diverse portfolio, we also strive to help develop the local and international music community. We are proud sponsors of the Stradivarius International Violin Competition. Charles W. Liu Fine Violins hosts the Stradivarius International Violin Competition approximately every five years at the University of Utah, giving players all around the world a chance to compete and perform in front of some of the world’s leading performers and pedagogues. In each of our competitions, we provided the winner with a Stradivarius violin on which to perform during the final ceremonies. The Utah Symphony joins with us at each event and provides performance opportunities for our winners. Previous laureates have gone to phenomenon success including sweeping victories at the Menuhin Violin Competition, the Wieniawski Violin Competition, (among others) as well as prominent appointments to the London Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Detroit Symphony Orchestra and more.
We have also proudly sponsored the guest artists of the Los Angeles Suzuki Institute since 2018 and have also sponsored the Montecito International Music Festival in addition to numerous workshops held by the American String Teachers Association.
Charles W. Liu began his career in China at the Beijing Technical School of Instrument Making at the age of sixteen. He earned his degree of Luthier from the Violin Making School of America in 1997 and worked two years restoring instruments at Peter Paul Prier & Sons Violins. For over twenty years, Charles Liu has put his focus on making and restoring, and is nationally recognized for his work.
