Violin made for Voit& Geiger, Chicago 1930
Featured Instrument Anton Voit (b.1882) and Leroy F. Geiger (b.1900, d.1960) were skilled makers in the Chicago scene in the early part of the 20th century. Voit descended from a long line of German violinmakers and immigrated to America just prior to WWI. Geiger became an assistant to John Hornsteiner and worked alongside Carl G. Becker at William Lewis & Son. Voit & Geiger incorporated in 1923. In addition to making their own instruments, they imported and set up high-quality trade instruments from Europe. Geiger eventually moved to Los Angeles, CA. This violin was made especially for their shop in 1930 and possesses a beautiful one-piece back and ripe tone. Available Now |
An Early 20th Century Violin German Interpretation of Maggini
A beautiful German interpretation of the great Brescian maker, Giovanni Paolo Maggini (b. c.1580, d. c. 1631). This violin was likely made prior to the 1930’s and features beautiful wood, doubled purfling and the famous triple-turned scroll which so many Maggini interpretations possess. Maggini’s actual scrolls are quite varied and are generally “under-turned” with only one or two examples knows to have this “over-turned” effect. This violin has a generous sound with great response. It’s in wonderful condition and would serve as a great “player’s instrument”. Available Now |

"Born at Trest (popular summer resort in Moravia). Worked there 1927. Violins acclaimed as representing the greatest advancement in violin construction since the days of the Cremona makers. Built correctly on the usual scientific principles. Italian breast wood, carefully chosen for its "singing qualities" -- backs of the prettiest material. Discoverer of a special oil varnish which has materially assisted him "in solving the problem of old Italian tone". Asserted that "these new era violins, without any development, answer the most exacting requirements in evenness, brilliance, quantity and quality of tone colour". Endorsed by Sevcik, Koian and other Bohemian virtuosi, also gold medals at various Expositions." (Universal Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers)
