Trade-In/Up Policy
We deeply appreciate our customers and always strive to help you make the best choice in stringed instruments. As you are making your decision, please keep in mind the following store policies:
1. If you have purchased an instrument from Charles W. Liu Fine Violins, you will have the option of trading up for another instrument -not accessories and bows- at any time. You must choose an instrument for purchase of equal or greater value to the instrument currently owned.
2. Only the original purchaser is eligible to receive 100% of the purchase price (minus trade-in fees) towards trade-in. If you have purchased one of our instruments from the original purchaser, we have no obligation to honor trade-in credit for that instrument.
3. Fees. You will receive 100% of your purchase price, less a trade-in fee for each instrument ($99.00 for violins/violas, $179.00 for cellos, and $325.00 for basses), to be applied towards the new instrument purchase, provided that the trade in instrument has remained in good condition. The costs of any necessary repairs shall be deducted from the trade in value at the time of trade in. It must be understood that major and/or serious repairs may greatly reduce the trade in value of an instrument. Any repairs not made by our shop shall be assessed at the time of trade in and these outside repairs may be required to be completely redone, in which case the costs of the new repairs shall be deducted from the trade in value as well as any reduction in instrument value due to the nature of the damage or repairs. You may not receive any value for an instrument that has been severely damaged.
4. Multiple trade-ins. Customers who have purchased multiple instruments from us are welcome to trade in more than one instrument toward the purchase of a new instrument. However, the customer with multiple trade-ins must purchase an instrument that is priced at least 90% greater than the combined total trade-in values.
5. Outside trade-ins. If you have purchased an instrument from another seller and would like to start working with us, we will show our appreciation by offering trade-in value for your instrument. However, we are not able to offer 100% of the purchase price of such instruments and the trade in value will be determined on a case-to-case basis depending on the condition of the instrument, the value of the instrument being traded and the value of the instrument to be purchased.
6. Bows. If you purchase Pernambuco bow valued at or above $1,000, you are allowed to trade it in toward a higher end bow. The trade-in bow must be in good condition, a fee of $99.00 shall be deducted from the trade in value. Any minor repairs needed on the trade-in bow, such as a new wrapping shall also be deducted from the trade in value.
7. Exemptions: Certain instruments in our collection may be exempt or ineligible for trade-in due to existing contractual obligations. Some Consignment Instruments may fall into this category. Carbon Fiber Bows are Exempt from Trade-In Policy.

1. Whether you are renting through the regular rental program or one of our interest-free rental programs, you will be building principle that can later be used as trade-in towards a larger instrument or the purchase of a higher quality instrument. Standard trade-in fees apply.
